Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that was launched in 2009 and used Blockchain as its backbone technology, which allowed ledgers of transactions to become public, and simply eliminate the need of a middleman. Bitcoin’s popularity attracts not only investors, but also companies to use it as a means of payment.
This event discussed the rise of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, that has left regulators and authorities scratching their heads to find the perfect formula to regulate it. Indonesian Central Bank or Bank Indonesia (BI) recently issued a regulation banning bitcoin and other forms of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment for fintech companies.
While BI (Bank of Indonesia) has taken a firmer stance, OJK (Authority of Financial Services) continues to monitor existing local cryptocurrency markets to figure out what to do. Pandu Sastrowardoyo, Chairwoman from Blockchain Zoo believes that further regulation would ensure transparency in the market.
